For a fantastic day trip, try Dungeness Spit, located in the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge along the northern coast of the Olympic Peninsula. It is an hour drive but totally worth the trip. The spit is a preserve for native birds, no dogs allowed, so bring the camera. You can make the full 10 mile round-trip hike and check out the New Dungeness Lighthouse at the 5 mile mark. Be sure to check the tide calendar before you go. Having made this hike myself I have to recommend it to out-of-towners or even locals who don’t know it’s there. Simply beautiful!
Originally uploaded by bluegullinn This was an early morning shot of the Deception Pass Bridge that connects Whidbey Island with the main land. It was foggy, so the water isn’t visible, but this area is one of the most beautiful sights you will ever see. Whidbey is just 20 minutes from Port Townsend by ferry, and a great day trip for our guests.
