Jazz Festival 2016 – Port Townsend, WA. Whether you’re a journeyman performer, aspiring professional, or an enthusiastic beginner, the weeklong workshop at Jazz Port Townsend is the perfect opportunity to meet other excellent musicians, soak up a week of jazz in a seaside paradise, and leave as a better musician. If you are an educator, please visit our Educator Track section to learn how you can be a part of the week.

Artistic Director John Clayton has hand-picked faculty who are outstanding both as performers and teachers. They’ll inspire you with their playing, and then work with you directly to develop your own skills.

You’ll receive focused instruction as you rehearse daily in combos or vocal classes. Jazz Theory sessions provide valuable information for increasing your skills as an improviser. Master classes are conducted each day by faculty members who cover topics specific to their chosen instruments. “Faculty Presents” concerts each afternoon give you a chance to hear performances in an intimate setting. The workshop culminates in a series of “Students Present” concerts in which all participants have an opportunity to perform.

Applicants must have good technical command of their instrument or voice, as well as elementary improvisation experience or a basic knowledge of music theory. Differing levels of experience are expected, and every effort is made to match players of similar abilities. An audition is required.

Read more about audition requirements.

Applicants apply at one of three levels: Beginner/Intermediate, Advanced, or Semi-Pro. Semi-pro players have the option of applying for special themed combos, focusing on specific styles (details in the audition instructions). All participants receive daily instruction from our outstanding artist faculty.

Port Townsend Elevated Ice Cream Co.

Ice cream on the waterfront

Ice cream on the waterfront

As the Port Townsend weather heats up, it is nice to know there is a fun spot to cool off. Elevated Ice Cream Co. has something for everyone. Fresh and local ingredients go into their “scratch made” product. With at least 30 different flavors of ice cream, sherbet, and Italian Ices you can’t go wrong. They have seasonal flavors along with the tried and true favorites (mine is the Swiss Orange Chocolate Chip). If ice cream is not your thing, it’s alright I’m not here to judge, they have espresso, baked goods and an adjoining candy shop. Their chocolates and truffles are handmade and make a perfect treat for you or to take back home as a special gift. The candy shop also provides a selection of candies from around the world and something for that difficult to shop for person. Do not leave without trying the salted caramel chocolate.

Port Townsend best small town in America

June 27, 2014 by bluegullinn

Well, one of America’s 10 best small towns of 2014 according to Fodor’s Travel. Port Townsend will always be number one in my heart, but is in good company. Some other towns listed are Telluride, Colorado and Paia, Hawaii… nothing to sneeze at. The only way to know for sure is to come for a visit. If you have been to PT you already know what all the fuss is about. If you haven’t been out this way, now you don’t have to take my word for it, this is a must-see kind of town.Port Townsend

Thai Food, Try Some

June 23, 2014 by bluegullinn

When you visit Port Townsend and find yourself in the mood for Thai food, head to Khu Larb Thai Restaurant. This is the best Thai food restaurant around, seriously, miles around. This is a lovely place for a date or a get-together with friends, they always have a fresh rose on each table. From the menu my personal favorites are their Egg Rolls, Tom Yum Goong, and the Garlic Pork… yummm. They also have delicious bubble tea and to-go orders “next door” at the Little Rose. I think you’ll find the only bad thing about this place is you have to come back to P.T. to get more! Khu Larb Thai

Tea Time or Tee Time

June 18, 2014 by bluegullinn

While different, these can both be great ways to spend an afternoon in Port Townsend. Set up a golf tee time at  Port Townsend Golf Course, located within walking distance of the Blue Gull Inn. It is a 9 hole golf course with a driving range that boasts beautiful views of town and the Olympic Mountains on a clear day. If you are looking for a ‘cup of tea’ time then head downtown to Pippas’s Real Tea.  This is more of a modern take on a tea room, so it’s a laid-back,casual, and comfortable way to enjoy a soothing cup of tea and tasty treat.Pippa's Real Tea
